Postoperative Instructions

KEEP IT DRY The bandages should be kept dry and clean. Do not change the bandages at home.
KEEP IT UP When resting, keep the foot up, at the same height as your waist (or when sitting you may rest your foot on a chair, small table or pillows). It is not necessary to stay in bed.
KEEP IT ICED Place an ice pack over the bandages for at least the first two days. You may use ice in a sealed plastic bag, like a zip-lock bag. Change the ice 3 to 4 times a day. The ice pack can bekept on the foot by using a large rubber band or tape. You may not feel the ice through the bandages but it’s working!
KEEP IT SHORT For the first two days walk for only short distances wearing your surgical shoes. It is not necessary to wear these shoes when resting or sleeping. These shoes should be worn for about two weeks.
KEEP IT CLEAN A suggestion on how to take a bath:

  1. Walk into the empty bathtub and sit sideways with your feet over the side.
  2. Fill the tub and bathe.
  3. Empty the tub.
  4. Turn your body sideways and stand on a dry towel placed on the bottom of the tub.
KEEP COMFY Take the prescribed medications as directed on the bottle. Remember you are not sick,so bathe, get dressed and eat normal meals. This will make you heal faster and feel better.
KEEP CALM
  1. No need for concern if there is tingling in the toes. This may last for a few days.
  2. No need for concern if there is a small amount of blood in the bandage- this is normal.
  3. No need for concern if there is blue discoloration on the skin. This can last for two weeks.
CALL THE OFFICE
  1. If there is continuous bleeding through the bandages
  2. If you injure your foot
  3. If you develop a fever over 100 degrees.
REMEMBER

ICE AND ELEVATION ARE VERY EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING SWELLING AND DISCOMFORT.
